I used to use regular old emery nail files. They got the job done. They shaped my nails and I never needed clippers. After doing a little bit of research, I learned that I had probably damaged my nails, so I I decided it was time for a new one. I read about Ruby Stone Crystal File and my heart was set on it. Users said it was durable (unless they dropped it) and it was great on their nails.
I went to Sally's and I was really excited. I came home with it and used it straightaway. It had a very fine texture and it left my nails feeling very smooth.
A few days later, my nails started to break and peel unlike before. I have a hard time growing my nails as it is and I was so disappointed. I started my research again. I went to Sally's and found Tropical Shine's many nail files. After some browsing, I went home with the larger of the 180-grit.
This file is a bit coarse, but it was what I needed. I was able to shape my nails with ease and have been happy since.
Result: Tropical Shine wins this round for me. The file is big, so it's easy to handle during use. It hasn't damaged my nails, but I think I may get a 220-grit just to smooth and seal my edges after filing. Both files are washable, so plus to Ruby Stone there. It also comes in small plastic case. Other than that, the crystal file can be tricky. Because it's so fine, it's not ideal for those with longer nails - unless you want to sit there and file for a while.
What kind of nail file do you use? What have been your positive/negative experiences with each?
